Subedar Major (later Honorary Captain) Bana Singh, PVC, when he led his team to conquer the highest peak inSiachen in 1987, did so quietly, without fanfare. So did young Vikram Batra or Arun Khetarpal as they fought till glorious death. There was Ian Cardozo, a young Gorkha Major, who cut off his own leg after he stepped on a land mine in the 1971 war. He asked his Gorkha comrade to take it away and bury it. And finally, there is Khudi Ram Bose, not even 19, when he climbed the gallows in 1908 with a smile (after undergoing savage torture at the hands of his British captors). The nation's judiciary and their leader should surely emulate the examples of these icons of selfless service to the nation.
