I did not know Prakash much during our Pilani days but have been working sporadically with him for some years, and very, very closely in the last few. What will for ever be etched in my mind is his ingenuousness.  In all my conversations with him I have never once noticed the slightest tinge of malice or grudge towards anyone, a trait so rare among human beings (even more so in the Detroit automotive culture!) one can only hope to emulate. Even when he was staring at the harshest reality of life in the last few months he never let it get the better of him in the slightest manner.  It was just friendly and cheerful conversations as usual till the last day, no fears, no bitterness, no complaints. He would often come up to my office and illustrate on my eraser board how Prakash would travel from Ahmedabad to Trivandrum or what the cross-section of Prakash's favorite Buddy's Pizza slice looked like- he was famously known in the local automotive circles for referring to himself in the third-person rather than the first.  He had very serious thoughts of attending the upcoming reunion event but had to abandon them after the medical diagnosis. I am not a very emotional person but this one hits hard.
Musings amongst people of our age group is rife with advice on the ephemeral nature of life and on what our priorities should be as we age.  Sometimes I have felt that such obsessing is counter-active in itself. But the events of the last week drives home some truth - as much as we are not too old to live we are not too young to die.

Dear Subbu its a sad and shocking news for all of us.
.
I recall Prakash being one of our close group member at BITS Pilani, was an excellent person and a very good friend. We were always together and also lived in the same hostel wing all through our stay of 5 years  at Pilani . We will always miss him and will pray that may his sole rest in piece. I am writing this on behalf of the following from Electrical Engineering batch :

Brajesh Kumar
Amit Kumar
Jawahar Lal Jain
Chander Mohan

Incidentally just for information , Prakash Naik's roll no was 198 whilst mine was 197 .

Sadly our another dear friend Sardar Kanwaljt Singh also left this world some 8 years back and with this sad news our memories take us back to those golden days spent as students at Pilani .

With deep regrets I inform you that our friend Prakash (Naik) passed away yesterday.  He was diagnosed with a somewhat rare lung ailment earlier this year.  They were able to prescribe no medication for it and a lung transplant was being suggested.  He appeared to be doing quite well and was attending work very normally till last Monday when he was taken down by pneumonia and never recovered from it. Nagesh and I visited him in the hospital but he was pretty much in an induced sleep most of the time.
Regards,
Subbu
