While I will not disagree with Subbu, I have to say that the book is eminently readable (did download the book on Kindle and have read a big chunk of it).
On the section on BC, I would have to say that Bassett missed an opportunity to make it more relevant to one the themes in his book. He sets up a perfect segue in an earlier chapter with a discussion on the setting up of an "Indian MIT", which is essentially about two competing endeavors (i.e. IIT/K and BITS/Pilani) and explores which of these might be the rightful heir to MIT.
I wrote up a blog about the book that is BITS-centric. If you have a perfectly useful quarter hour that you would like to squander away, here you go: "BITS - Pretender or Rightful Heir of MIT". Disclaimer: It is not meant to be review of the book.

I, like another reviewer of the book, wish that the author had elaborated more on the accomplishments rather than on grooming habits.I had the privilege of rubbing shoulders with BC in the R&D division at Jyoti Ltd upon his return to India. Needless to say, it was not it in any metaphorical sense but just in the literal- in the elevators and stairways! It was then believed that he was being groomed to take over the reigns of the R&D unit in a short time(at the tender age of 28?) from, if my memory serves right, another Pilani alumnus.Did Avtar Singh go to MIT as well?Subbu
