Top 5 sparkling centuries by Indians in 2015

The Indian team particularly the batsmen had an outstanding year in 2015. They scored as many as 22 centuries in the calendar year across all formats, out of which 13 were in a winning cause, 5 resulted in losses and 4 were in matches which were drawn.

In the olden days the Man of the Match in cricket used to be awarded to the player whose performance in the game was the most outstanding. However, in recent times it is invariably given to a player from the winning side even if it not necessarily the most outstanding effort from both sides. Cricket has always been a batsmen's game and they receive more praise and accolades for their performance than bowlers whose efforts while notable does not get the same plaudits from fans.

Here, we re-live the five best innings by Indian batsmen in 2015. Four of them resulted in victories while one was in a losing cause. Take a look.

Shikhar Dhawan -137 versus South Africa, ODI, World Cup Match at Melbourne, Australia, 22nd February 2015

This ODI was considered to be crucial in determining who would top the group, and in theory get a weaker opponent in the quarter-finals. India won the toss and elected to bat. Prior to this tournament Dhawan was in poor form but had scored 73 in the previous group match against Pakistan. South Africa have always had a good pace attack and a good start by the openers was vital to post a huge score against the Proteas.

Dhawan started confidently clipping Vernon Philander off his legs for a boundary off the fourth delivery he faced.

Rohit Sharma was run out in the very next over and South Africa succeeded in putting the brakes on the Indian scoring. At the end of 13 overs India were just 49/1.

Soon Dhawan began to up the scoring rate. He reached his 50 off 70 balls by cutting Wayne Parnell to the third man boundary. He was dropped of the first ball off the 20th over when he cut Parnell to backward point where Hashim Amla grassed a fairly simple chance. The Delhi dasher capitalised on this reprieve by going on to score a century.

He reached the milestone by cutting Parnell past point to the third man boundary. His hundred had come in 122 balls, which meant that the second fifty had come in just 52 deliveries.

After that he really went after the bowling by hitting Dale Steyn for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries. In the next over Morne Morkel was hit for a six.

Dhwawn was finally dismissed for 138 when he was caught by Amla off Parnell for 137 when he hooked a bouncer to long leg. His 137 came off 146 balls and included 16 fours and two sixes.

India won the match by 130 runs and Dhawan was named the Man of the Match.
